New York City (JFK)

4 Reasons to Stay Local in New York City

Statue of Liberty. Yankee Stadium. Central Park. Check. Check. Check. You know New York City’s top attractions without opening a guidebook. But America’s largest city has far more to offer than the standard fare. The next time you book a boutique hotel in New York City, find a truly authentic New York City adventure by putting these four experiences on your itinerary.

Spend an afternoon in the park

Spend an afternoon in the park

New York City is home to one of the world’s most well known parks, Central Park. But that’s not the only fantastic greenspace in the city. Fort Tryon Park was gifted to the city of New York by John D. Rockefeller in 1917, and to this day remains one of the city’s most beautiful outdoor pieces of art. Visitors can picnic, play, exercise, or just take in the historic architecture still prominent throughout the park. It has beautiful gardens within as well as a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Another beautiful outdoor space is Greenacre Park. Not many places in midtown Manhattan can say they sport a waterfall, but Greenacre is one of them. Nestled amongst tall buildings and skyscrapers, it is a park with fragrant flowers and leafy corners that is the perfect afternoon getaway spot. This secluded park in the city was featured on Project for Public Spaces’ Best Parks in the World.

Stop and savor a snack on Stone Street

Stop and savor a snack on Stone Street

In New York City’s financial district, Stone Street will catch you off guard. This narrow cobbled street is more reminiscent of European streets than New York City. It is has restaurants that offer such delicacies as Swedish meatballs, Greek kebabs, Italian pizza or Mexican enchiladas.

Visit an island of your choice

Visit an island of your choice

Manhattan isn’t the only island in New York City worthy of a visit. Consider visiting Governor’s Island, only a five-minute ferry ride from Manhattan, which features Hammock Grove, historic mansions, a great miniature golf course and more for a great summer day trip. The island also offers great views of the Statue of Liberty.

Another option is to take the aerial tramway to Roosevelt Island. The island has promenades for walking and biking all the way around the outside of the island. With a 19th-century lighthouse and a park dedicated to Franklin D. Roosevelt, for whom the island got its name, Roosevelt Island has parks, gardens and playing fields are scattered amongst residences.

Take in the vibrant street art

For all art fans and street art fans alike, there an abundance of great street art to see around the city. 5 Pointz and MoMa PS1 are right across the street from each other, so those are a great place to start.

5 Pointz is an outdoor art exhibit on Long Island. Considered a “graffiti Mecca,” this 200,000 square foot factory is covered wall to wall in colorful street art. MoMa PS1, founded in 1971, this is one of the oldest and largest contemporary non-profit art exhibits in the US. MoMa is actively searching to display the world’s most experimental art while highlighting emerging artists and new genres of artistry. A true artistic playground, MoMA PS1 strives to uphold its diverse and innovative actions to continue to bring contemporary art to international audiences.

With countless unique activities and attractions, from parks to sports to art and more, there’s more than enough to do the next time you stay local New York City.
