4 Reasons to Stay Local in Los Angeles

Expect these unique travel experiences when you stay in an independent boutique hotel in Los Angeles.

When you think of Los Angeles, you probably think of bright lights, show business, sunshine and the sound of the ocean. And, yes, southern California has all that. But Los Angeles also offers a full range of cultural and culinary destinations beyond the Walk of Fame.

When you’re ready to see more of the West Coast’s largest city, stay local in Los Angeles to uncover these hidden gems.

Dig into some authentic dim sum

Dig into some authentic dim sum

Los Angeles is the perfect place for a crash course in dim sum, or Chinese dumplings, with excellent restaurants scattered across the region.

The most famous spot for these Asian delicacies is Din Tai Fung, which boasts four southern California locations in addition to outposts in ten different countries in Asia.

Dim sum is traditionally served tableside in silver dishes from wheeled carts. Order the pork sui mai or the shrimp har gau to enjoy bite-sized morsels of meat encased in wheat or rice wrappings. Or, go big with soup dumplings, or xiao long bao. This treat features pork or crab sealed inside an edible wrapping and served in a broth. Delicious!

Immerse yourself in the arts

The Los Angeles area is home to several world-class art museums, including the Getty Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

If you’re not in the mood for the traditional museum experience but are still looking for cultural enrichment, you’re in luck. Just check out the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. LACMA is home to Urban Light, an outdoor sculpture by Chris Burden featuring rows of light posts and made famous in TV and film. LACMA also features book signings and artist talks that are free and open to the public.

See a star without being a total tourist

You could walk around Rodeo Drive trying to catch a glimpse of a celebrity like a total tourist. Or, for a more sophisticated entrée to the Los Angeles entertainment industry, the Paley Center for Media hosts regular screenings and discussions with directors, writers and actors from film and television.

Recent public panels hosted by the Beverly Hills nonprofit included evenings with the creators of the HBO series Looking and Emmy-nominated actor Timothy Olyphant of the FX program Justified.

Laze away an afternoon in Los Feliz

Griffith Park and Griffith Observatory in downtown Los Angeles have long been major tourist attractions – in part because the observatory has been free to visit since 1935.

If you’re in the area, why not make an afternoon of it? Less than two miles away is Skylight Books, an independent bookseller frequented by area authors that has a special storefront just for art and photography books.

A few doors down from Skylight Books is Fred 62, a retro-style diner known for its large menu of milkshake options. In true Los Angeles fashion, Fred 62 also features vegetarian and gluten-free options. And it’s open 24 hours a day!
