The Traveler’s Tips: Salt Lake City, UT

Trip To: Salt Lake City, UT

Location: United States

Duration: 1 week

Stayed At: Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. We loved staying at a boutique hotel because of the great location and authentic experiences we had. The hotel gave us great recommendations for restaurants and activities in the area!

Best Thing I Ate: Red Iguana Mexican Food (736 W North Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84116). Featured on Diners, Drive ins and Dives. Voted America’s best Mexican restaurant, this authentic hole-in-the-wall restaurant is a popular place for all locals & visitors. Make sure to get there before your desired seating time as there is always a wait. If you have 6+ people in your group, you can call ahead and make a reservation. We loved the assorted traditional mole sauces that they had! Also, the chips and salsa are some of the best we’ve had.

Best Daytime Activity: There are so many great activities in SLC. They have these cute green-bike stations all around the city that are free to use. We loved biking and exploring the sites. We also loved spending the afternoon shopping at City Creek, a beautiful outdoor & indoor mall with great store options. Another morning we woke up early, and hiked in Cottonwood Canyon (a canyon just outside of SLC) we were able to watch the sunrise from the mountain, it truly left us speechless.

Best Night Activity: Karaoke half price sushi bar in downtown SLC (1301 E Miller Ave). Whats better than half price sushi late at night and a karaoke bar?! Nothing. Downtown SLC has endless fun and unique bars  and late-night restaurants like this. Salt Lake is filled with great bars, restaurants, charming cafes and beautiful city life.

Trip Highlight: Hiking Silver Lake in American Fork Canyon. This hike is one of my all time favorites. It is recommended to use a car with four wheel drive to get to the hiking trail. Drive up the small dirt roads in American Fork canyon until you reach Silver Lake Reservoir. Follow the trail-head at the reservoir for Silver Lake Hike. We saw the most incredible views of the canyon as we hiked up, and our final destination was even better. Nestled at the top of the mountains is Silver Lake, a crystal clear lake that turns silver in the winter from reflecting the snow covered mountains. During the summer you can swim in the lake, or just enjoy the stunning views and the waterfall. Bring a camera for lots of pictures!

Must-Have/Could Not Have Left Home Without: A jacket. No matter when you’re traveling to SLC, it gets chilly. Make sure to bring a warm jacket for activities or hiking.

Most Inspiring/Captivating Part: The outdoor playground that is Salt Lake County. There are endless outdoor activities: explore Antelope Island, escape to Park City’s rolling green hills & mountains, mountain bike at Deer Valley, hike the Great Salt Lake shoreline, or float on the the Provo river. Whatever you choose to do, you will be blown away by the majestic mountains and beautiful scenery.

Favorite Shopping Spot/ Souvenir Item: City Creek. A beautiful shopping area with endless amounts of stores. However, we found our greatest souvenirs to be the adventures we took, and the memories we created.

Why Travel Here: Salt Lake City has a natural draw for those who love a combination of large city life with natural beauty and fantastic adventures. Whether you are wanting great shopping and nightlife, or beautiful hikes and scenery, Salt Lake City has the perfect combination of it all.

Bonus: If you have an extra day, this is what you should do: No matter the season, make sure to ride the ski lift at one of the nearby ski resorts. In the winter it means you get to go skiing, but in the spring, summer and fall it gives you beautiful views of the valleys and mountainsides and then you get to enjoy a relaxing ride back down.
